LOIANO ARTE SACRA.jpg

Traces of art

A stop on the Goethe "Grand Tour", the village of Loiano is one of the oldest post stations in our Apennines and it is here that the Hermit friars of the Order of St. Augustine found their home.

Hidden treasures in the mountains

It was 1324, in a land of ancient borders, when the Augustinian friars built the first convent on whose foundations, today, we find the church of SS. Giacomo and Margherita, a treasure chest of sacred art in the town of Loiano. Built in 1616 and renovated in 1933, it saw the passage of pilgrims and illustrious personalities who passed through this portion of the Apennines, and houses precious works of art that could be the starting point for an itinerary to discover the sacred tradition of our mountains. . In fact, two steps outside the town will be enough to discover the history and religious gems of the Loiano area.

In the nearby and characteristic hamlet of Anconella, the Church of San Vittore emerges with its beautiful bell tower, guardian of an enchanting organ from 1880. In Scanello, on the main altar of the church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista you can admire an important painted altarpiece. in 1575 by Bartolomeo Passarotti, a friend of Correggio. Of more ancient origin is, however, the Church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, in Barbarolo, where you cannot miss a visit to the ancient and suggestive oratory of San Cristoforo, reachable only on foot.

The "gems" not to be missed to discover the sacred mountain art:

  • Altarpiece depicting St. James, the town';s patron saint, by the Flemish Denijs Calvaert entitled “Madonna, Bambino e San Giacomo"

  • Statue of the Madonna del Carmine by Angelo Piò

  • Lamentation in terracotta on the Dead Christ dating back to the 18th century

  • A walk to the oratory of San Cristoforo

A very special thanks ...

Just before crossing the door of the sacristyof thethe church of SS. Giacomo and Margherita, you can read an inscription in honor of the Franciscan Pier Jacopo of the dall'Olio family. He was an important figure for Loiano and it is to him that the choir, the presbytery and the bell tower are due, built around 1757 as an extension of the complex. The dome built in 1933 is more recent.
